June 2005
Dr. Tsuneto Yoshii passed away in Japan in June at the age of 84. Dr.
Yoshii was an early pioneer in the use of sterilized sawdust as a
substrate for growing mushrooms. He was the founder of the Yoshii
Mycological Institute on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu. In
recognition of his accomplishments Dr. Yoshii received honorary
doctorates from two Chinese universities as well as universities in
Taiwan and Korea. Dr. Yoshii was also active in fostering the use of
ganoderma and cordyceps varieties as health supplements.
Malcolm Clark of Gourmet Mushrooms, who studied with Dr. Yoshii in the
early 1970s and who maintained a close friendship and collaboration for
thirty years, said of him, “Dr. Yoshii was a somewhat shy and reclusive
man, but he was instrumental in many breakthroughs in mushroom use and
cultivation.”
Malcolm Clark and the
staff of Gourmet Mushrooms extend their condolences to the family of
Dr. Tsuneto Yoshii, mushroom pioneer, friend and mentor.
